Along with the imagery from the first stanza of “To One in Paradise” there are many pieces of the garden with connections to Poe’s life. The stone benches sitting along the edges of the garden were taken from the Yarrington Boarding house, which was located near the Capitol along Bank Street (the site where Poe married his wife Virginia). The house was saved by the efforts of the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore, which made arrangements with the city of Baltimore and opened the home as The Baltimore Poe House in 1949. Due to limited space and the importance of protecting this precious historic site, guests will be required to wait outside the house for their tours to begin. No one is permitted to enter Poe House without a ticket and there is no space within to wait. Please prepare and dress for inclement weather. The house is open for guided tours without appointment most Saturdays.

The Enchanted Garden

Changing exhibits and tours are scheduled from time to time. The house is located at the crest of Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Mulholland Drive and is open for guided tours by reservation only. An outing to a U-pick farm can be a great tradition for kids. Freedom Acres Farm is a 5.5 acre farm that grows u-pick flowers, various heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, assorted squash, and a large assortment of peppers sweet and hot. We grow pesticide free vegetables from non-gmo seeds. We keep a list, year-round, of farms where you can pick your own produce, and that list is below. We are a small, family operated Grade A Raw Goat Dairy. We are regulated by the SC DHEC Dairy Division.

There is no admission fee to access the store. You can access both the strawberry fields and the play area and barn with a single admission fee of $11 (paid online or $13 paid at the gate) per person. Jain was feverishly creating dozens of birdhouses, some two stories tall, painted with geometric mandala patterns. Jain’s creative outlet is featured in a special art installation, “Birdhouse Forest,” at this month’s Charlotte International Arts Festival (CIAF). Artist and Charlotte native David Butler, known by the moniker DavehasWingz, documents the city and its people with limited edition Polaroids.
